Description

As a Researcher in the Stop Violence Against Women Campaign (SVAW) team, you will conduct Amnesty International's research on the human rights impact of violence against women (VAW) in coordination with SVAW Campaign team members, AI country experts, other NGOs and VAW specialists. You will provide policy advice and political judgement, and contribute to the implementation of the SVAW campaign strategy. In consultation with the SVAW Campaign team members you will also help develop strategies to promote respect for women's human rights.

You will need a good understanding of research methods, proven experience of undertaking research on the impact of violence against women on human rights and experience of using independent and impartial research to achieve societal change.

You will have a solid understanding of campaigning in a membership environment, proven experience of writing research and campaigning materials for a range of audiences and the ability and desire to work cooperatively with others on a team. 

Job Purpose

To conduct research, provide policy advice and political judgement, and contribute to the development and implementation of effective research, advocacy and campaigning strategies on the human rights impact of violence against women (VAW), in order to support AI work on this issue and the Stop Violence against Women Campaign (SVAW).

Responsibilities:

1.Monitor, research, investigate and analyse relevant issues and developments in order to provide timely, accurate, independent and impartial assessments and expert advice on the human rights impact of violence against women.
2.Undertake quality research and data collection on VAW issues, including by organizing or participating in field research missions.
3.Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of effective research, advocacy and campaigning strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities of the SVAW campaign and the goals of the International Secretariat.
4.Prepare guidelines, policy position documents, and strategy papers on VAW issues and provide advice on VAW issues to IS staff, sections, and the movement.
5.Write reports and other materials for publication and internal use, carry out project work, and contribute to and provide expert advice in relation to written and other materials produced by other Programmes.
6.Secure approvals of AI VAW report text and other materials from country teams, ILOP, PEP and other parts of the IS.
7.Co-ordinate research and, as appropriate, oversee, support and coordinate the work of external consultants.
8.Represent AI at relevant meetings to both internal, including the IS and the movement, and external stakeholders, including in governmental, inter-governmental, civil society, and other forums to communicate AI’s concerns, and positions.
9.Liaise with and give interviews to news media and to draft materials on VAW issues in coordination with MAV and relevant IS and section staff.
10.Contribute to the development and implementation of a comprehensive training and development program for IS and targeted sections, including by preparing training materials and participating in training initiatives for AI staff and membership.
11.Participate in and help facilitate the coordination of the team's work, helping prepare detailed work plans, budgets and schedules. Supervise SVAW campaign volunteer/s in devising tasks, ensuring delivery and feedback.

Skills and Experience:

•Specialist knowledge on VAW and human rights.
•Proven experience of undertaking research on the impact of violence against women on human rights.
•Proven experience of writing research and campaigning materials for a range of audiences.
•Demonstrated knowledge of international human rights law in relation to issues of violence against women.
•Ability to think strategically and exercise sound political judgement in contributing to the development and implementation of research, advocacy and campaign strategies.
•Understanding campaigning at the international level.
•Ability to represent AI to internal and external stakeholders and to communicate AI’s concerns, positions and demands.
•Experience of how campaigning with independent and impartial research can achieve societal change.
•Experience of managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities.
•Ability and willingness to undertake personal administrative tasks in accordance with AI’s guidelines on self-servicing.
