VA Grassroots Organizer
Chesapeake Climate Action Network
Location: Washington, DC
Last day to apply: September 12, 2008

Description

Organizer Needed in Key Swing State: Join the Clean Energy Campaign this Fall!

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is seeking a grassroots community organizer to mobilize citizens on the issue of clean energy in a key region in the D.C. metro area during the fall elections and into the next administration. The northern Virginia suburbs of D.C. are a critical region to this year's presidential election with both candidates making frequent stops in many D.C. metro area counties and cities throughout the fall. This organizer will be CCAN's point person on the ground, educating and mobilizing citizens to speak out about clean energy and climate change to candidates, Congressional members and state officials. To get a feel for our dynamic campaigns, check out our latest campaign video fighting against Exxon Mobil at http://strikeoutexxon.org/.

CCAN is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Virginia, Maryland and DC (http://www.chesapeakeclimate.org/).   Our mission is to educate and mobilize citizens of this region in a way that fosters a rapid societal switch to clean and efficient energy and away from our over reliance on fossil fuels.

The NOVA Grassroots Organizer will also coordinate volunteers and oversee local CCAN chapters in Northern Virginia, north of Fredericksburg.

Applicant will work closely with our Virginia campaign team in Richmond to fight coal and advocate for clean energy policies in Virginia.   We are looking for a smart, motivated campaigner with great people skills and a passion for global warming. Weekend and evening work is common, so flexibility on hours and days is essential.

Responsibilities

•Grassroots organizing and membership building
•Educating key elected officials and candidates on climate change and clean energy.
•Coalition building
•Assisting in executing creative actions and events
•Media outreach
•Policy and strategic planning
•Assisting State Director in various capacities

Requirements

•Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking skills a must!
•Experience with organizing diverse communities and volunteers of all ages.
•Experience working under deadlines while making best use of limited resources.
•Campaign experience, some knowledge of Virginia's political landscape, and a strong interest in stirring things up.
•Ability to travel as needed. Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
•B.S or B.A., or equivalent.
•Canvassing experience a plus!

DIVERSITY - CCAN is dedicated to grassroots and local activism and believes this movement can only succeed by including everyone affected by global warming (and that is everyone). We encourage applicants from diverse economic backgrounds and minority ethnicities. If there are any considerations or qualifications not acknowledged in our application, we encourage you to bring them to light.
