About Us
Our Public Affairs & Campaigns Team develop strong relationships with politicians of all parties in Westminster, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, locally and within the EU, to keep cancer and science high on the political agenda. When we want to galvanise our supporters we run creative and award-winning campaigns on the issues that affect cancer patients, supporters and researchers.

About the Role
As Head of Public Affairs & Campaigns, you’ll work closely with our press, policy development and prevention teams to ensure influencing is focused on agreed policy priorities and positions and that briefings are evidence-based and accurate. You will lead a high performing total team of 21, through 9 experienced direct reports operating at local, national and EU level.

Your responsibilities will include:

Work with the Director of Press & Policy and the Director of Cancer Prevention to plan, develop and implement the departmental operating strategy and plan
Develop and maintain an ongoing engagement programme for key senior Cancer Research UK employees
Identify gaps and opportunities in CRUK’s representation on external bodies, based on our policy priorities
Build and maintain working relationships with key external contacts including other charities, scientists, academic bodies, learned societies, politicians, civil servants, and arm’s length bodies.
Monitor political, policy and advocacy trends and developments, finding opportunities to grow the charity’s influence.

About You
We’re looking for someone passionate about public affairs who can bring a fresh perspective on our approach to campaigning. You will also have:

Experience of working in a public policy role, and a track record of strategically influencing key opinion-formers and decision-makers
Excellent knowledge of how Westminster, Whitehall, the EU and the devolved nations operate
Experience of running campaigning programmes
Experience of building productive relationships with, and influencing politicians and officials, ideally with the involvement of the public and/or patients to achieve this
Experience of developing strategies and the ability to lead their implementation
Excellent communications skills, and strong influencing and negotiating skills
Inspirational leadership style and team management experience
