- Political Manager, USA

Political Manager

Democrats for Education Reform

DESCRIPTION

Democrats for Education Reform is seeking a detail-oriented political researcher with a strong commitment to growing the Democratic Party and improving our country's public schools, to help lead our political and research departments.

About DFER

Democrats for Education Reform is a political organization that cultivates and supports leaders in the Democratic Party who champion America's public school children. Our mission is to ensure that the Democratic Party, consistent with its progressive values, pursues education policies that enable all students, particularly students from low-income families and students of color, to obtain a globally competitive education that empowers them to fulfill their limitless potential.

To do that, we will build a durable network of Democratic champions, allies, and supporters across the political and policymaking arenas to expand what works and change what is broken in the public education system, with the interests of students and families at the center of everything we do.

Responsibilities

DFER’s political team supports our state chapters’ advocacy and electoral work and directs our ambitious national political agenda. The Political Manager’s core responsibilities will include:

o  Managing our legislative scorecard (which includes conducting research and documenting conclusions about legislators’ positions and votes on our issues)

o  Conducting opposition research

o  Compiling our “daily clips” and distributing them to our team

o  Conducting general research and electoral support as needed

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you must be:

o  Extremely detail-oriented, even when working with a large data set

o  A thorough researcher: you follow paths to get deeper understanding, rather than taking the first available information

o  A strong writer

o  Flexible and service-oriented: our work is in service to the work of others, and the person in this role must be extremely responsive and flexible to do it well

o  Passionate about progressive politics, with experience on at least one electoral campaign

o  Supportive of our positions

It’d be helpful (though it is not required) if you also have:

o  Experience managing large data sets (above average Excel skills or SQL)

o  Experience on multiple electoral campaigns

o  Ability to translate documents into Spanish

o  Some experience/skill in graphic design (truly, not a requirement but if you had it, that’d be amazing)

It’s also probably helpful to know a bit more about our work environment. While we are not exactly start-up (we’ve been around for 10 years), if you’re looking for a super predictable set of projects that have long time horizons or an organization with a set way of doing things that you’ll have to just master, this isn’t the right spot for you. You’ll need to be flexible, fast and excited to help us learn and improve.

Commitment to Diversity

Democrats for Education Reform seeks individuals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds to apply for this position. We are committed to maximizing the diversity of our organization and recruiting a team that reflects the diversity of our nation’s public schools.
