Emerge America is seeking a person with high energy, ability to multi-task and incredible attention to detail to assist with our mission. The ideal candidate for the Deputy Communications Director position has deep knowledge of communications and politics, as well as a passion for seeing more Democratic women elected to office. We’re looking for someone who has experience doing communications for an advocacy organization, on a campaign or in an elected official’s office. This person should have familiarity writing press releases, op-eds and other communications materials, as well as experience dealing with the press. The perfect applicant will also have experience managing official social media channels, creating social media content, graphics and other digital content. Reporting to the Communications Director, all of the duties described below will contribute to our mission in an essential way.
Assist the Communications Director in developing the strategic communications plan for Emerge America;
Manage Emerge America’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram;
Create social media graphics and other digital content for use by Emerge America and our state affiliates;
Administer the relaunch of Emerge America and our 24 state affiliates’ websites;
Help in crafting a public presence for Emerge America that will include developing a comprehensive series of stories about Emerge America’s candidates, network, training curriculum, successes and supporters;
Assist the Communications Director in generating earned media coverage of Emerge America through proactive planning and rapid response, with a focus on state and local media;
Support Emerge America’s affiliates with communications work;
Write press releases, statements, media advisories, talking points, columns and remarks for Emerge America;
Develop templates for communications materials for distribution to the affiliates;
Prepare media briefings for Emerge America’s president, staff and board of directors;
Develop a plan for op-eds and blog posts which will include writing, editing and placing them in publications.
Experience and Qualifications
Enthusiasm for the advancement of Democratic women in politics;
At least three years of experience in a professional communications role;
Experience managing social media channels in an official capacity;
Excellent writing and editing skills;
Excellent follow-through and accountability;
Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail;
Ability to prioritize tasks and keep track of multiple projects;
Ability to create and maintain friendly and professional relationships with staff, key stakeholders and donors;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to think creatively and work independently;
Excellent time management skills;
Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
Excellent web skills and comfort trouble-shooting with technology;
Comfortable learning new technical and computer skills;
Demonstrated flexibility in problem-solving and ability to work occasional long hours and weekends;
An understanding of the Democratic political community;
Knowledge of women’s political leadership issues and political experience;
Campaign experience a plus.
Preferred but not required:
Experience working for a political organization;
Experience working on a campaign;
Experience creating graphics and other multimedia content on Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
Job Schedule and Location
Deputy Communications Director will work in the Emerge America office from 9am – 6pm, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekends will be required, with travel 3-4 times per year. This position is located in Emerge America’s Washington, DC office on Capitol Hill. It is accessible by public transportation.
