The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Federal Media Advocacy Director position in our Marketing and Communications department located in Washington, D.C.!
This individual will be responsible for strategic oversight and supervision of the advocacy media programs and communications projects of the Office of Media Advocacy in support of the American Heart Association’s FEDERAL advocacy agenda. Provides primary strategic advocacy communications consultation on FEDERAL issues to the Association’s executive leadership and Advocacy staff leadership, as well as affiliate organizations and related field units. Also serves as the initial advocacy contact for national media outlets; and as the primary liaison contact for congressional press secretaries and administrative press officers of regulatory and Executive-branch agencies
Develops and implements strategic direction on all communications activities and outreaches to the national media in support of the Association’s FEDERAL advocacy agenda
Provides editorial guidance in the development, drafting and distribution of all formal and informal FEDERAL advocacy communications tools geared to external and/or internal Association audiences
Provides strategic direction and support of the development and placement of FEDERAL advocacy issue advertising in national publications and/or publications with a heavy governmental and political readership
Represents the national Association and its FEDERAL Advocacy agenda in appropriate health related partnerships and coalitions, providing consultation and strategic recommendations dealing specifically with earned news media and public awareness/education issues
Serves as a strategic resource on FEDERAL communications advocacy and related media issues to Affiliates and other Association field units
Serves as the confidential media advisor on FEDERAL advocacy issues to senior national Association executives and professional and lay volunteers

Bachelor’s DegreeJournalism, Corporate Communications, Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or related area or equivalent work experience
At least eight (8) years of relevant experience
Experience in public relations, corporate communications and/or journalism, with a demonstrated succession of increasing professional responsibilities
Comprehensive knowledge of general media operations (both print and electronic), the political media, as well as various trade and scientific press, is essential
Experience in providing support for public policy advertising at the national and grass roots levels
Comprehensive knowledge of governmental operations, both congressional and Executive Branch agencies
Ability to travel 25% local and overnight stay
Experience with health care issues is desirable, as is experience in working with volunteer health organizations and/or related not-for-profit professional groups and trade organizations
