About the Position:

The Director of Strategic Impact (DSI) is an essential member of ERI’s global leadership who works in collaborative partnership with the Executive Director, the Co-Founder and Director and colleagues across ERI’s offices and programs to ensure that ERI’s work is strategic, aligned and effective. The DSI will design and oversee global campaigns, build teams, and develop strategic partnerships inside and outside of the organization in a manner that enhances effectiveness and impact throughout the organization. The DSI will also represent ERI externally.

The DSI will handle a range of strategy, coordination and campaign responsibilities across ERI’s teams, issues, strategies, and geographies. He/she will work to maximize ERI’s reach and impact by strengthening our global Campaigns program, leveraging our resources and aligning our advocacy strategies relating to ERI’s six global priority issues: climate change, corporate power, earth rights defenders, land rights, extractive industries and mega-development projects. He/She will be an experienced manager with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and able to foster collaboration and facilitate effective communication across teams, issues, strategies and geographies that comprise ERI’s four offices.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills and a track record in program development and management, including fundraising and financial oversight, external communications and public relations, and supervision of staff. This is a job for a smart, creative and persistent leader and manager who has significant experience in designing and implementing advocacy campaigns, a familiarity with human rights and environmental law and policy, and who will be comfortable managing multiple projects at the same time.

Roles and Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership, Vision Alignment and Strategic Program Implementation:

Works with ERI Directors to develop and implement global Campaigns Program, and leverage internal and external resources and relationships to achieve the global goals of the organization
Ensures alignment and prioritization of goals and activities in pursuit of mission and strategic objectives; works with the directors to assess the need for course corrections or adjustments to the plan
Develops and promotes systems and strategies that support large scale, strategic impact
Works with Directors to support an active strategic thinking culture at ERI, regularly assessing emerging trends and changes in the landscape and developing adaptive, nimble strategies to address emerging issues
With Directors, develops tools and strategies to aid in strategic decision-making across the organization
Coordinates and/or supports cross-departmental initiatives to ensure alignment, organizational effectiveness, and programmatic impact
Develops and manages issue-based campaigns across the organization, and oversee strategies to support a range of activities across ERI’s six issue areas
Identifies system improvements, capacity needs and infrastructure that can foster collaboration and impact across ERI’s programs, strategies, geographies and issue areas, and work with staff to implement those systems
Convenes meetings and processes of program directors, regional directors and issue leaders for bigger picture planning and alignment
Mentors staff with a supportive and collaborative approach
Works with development staff fundraising strategy and attend meetings with donors as requested
Assumes the Directors’ management responsibilities during periods of absence

External Relationships and Representation

Represents ERI at conferences, events, and other public fora, and with donors, partners and others as relevant
In conjunction with Directors and senior staff, helps develop and leverage strategic partnerships to enhance and advance ERI’s work
Cultivates relationships with key external partners, resources, and experts who can inform and support ERI’s goals and campaigns
Works with Finance and Development staff, support fundraising and fiscal oversight for Campaigns and Communications programs
Oversees development of, and draft a range of written materials including reports, briefing documents, talking points, press releases, op-eds, blogs, memos, etc.
Supervises and manages staff as relevant
Must be able and willing to travel

Required skills and experience:

Minimum 8 years of experience in leading and/or managing collaborative strategic campaigns, project management and advancing work across teams in an organization of similar size and complexity
At least 5 years in corporate campaigning, environmental and/or climate justice, human rights, and policy advocacy with proven ability to design and implement effective campaign strategies on these issues
Familiarity with and experience in human rights and environmental legal issues
Experience with finance and fundraising
Experience with staff supervision and management, with a strong commitment to collaboration
Strong research, writing, advocacy and communication skills
Excellent public speaking skills, and ability to represent ERI to the media and external stakeholders
Experience in working with legal experts and lawyers
Experience in working with international advocates, particularly from Asia and/or Latin America
Knowledge of ERI’s six issue focuses: climate change and climate justice; land rights; extractive industries; mega-projects; corporate power; and earth rights defenders.
Ability to work well with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment
Highly self-motivated and organized; comfort working under pressure and tight deadlines
Skilled at balancing long-term vision and daily responsibilities with ability to multitask and prioritize
Must be willing to travel, and available for weekend and evening responsibilities
Excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills with the ability to work well with colleagues of varied backgrounds and temperaments
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
Strong analytical skills
Excellent listener, with humility and sense of humor
Commitment to ERI’s mission and vision required

Desirable skills and experience:

Experience working with organizations from the global south
Organizing experience, particularly in the U.S. for local and international campaigns
Experience developing and implementing effective systems that foster collaboration and work, improve communication and information sharing
Communications savvy and experience working with the media including online organizing and social media
Strong organizational skills including planning, delegating, task management and facilitation
