Summary

The internship program with the Institute for Veteran Policy (IVP) is an opportunity for students to gain hands on experience in policy and advocacy. Policy-related majors such as political science, public health, behavioral health, law, and public administration are preferred. Candidates in other majors are encouraged to apply as well.The ideal candidate for this position enjoys research and writing. Other desirable skillsets include familiarity with data collection, experience with literature reviews, and an understanding of legislative functions and government agencies. Stipend or work-study is available.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

Research and writing

Compile research collections into literature reviews

Write blog posts on topical veteran issues

Help with curriculum development for our public education campaigns

Track and update conferences related to policy focused on veteran rights

Conduct fact finding/checking for documents and publications

Conduct general legislative research for the department

Help with setup and promotion of events

Participate in outreach

 

Requirements

Strong research and writing skills

Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

Currently enrolled in college

Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), online applications, and data entry

Basic understanding of research methods

Specific experience in public interest research, advocacy, communications, community organizing, and/or outreach are highly desirable

Eligibility for VA work-study a plus

Veteran status highly desired, but not required

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

Manage multiple projects while using effective time management skills, meet deadlines, adjust to shifting priorities, and exercise sound judgment

Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Cultural Humility Initiative
