The Healthcare Division, in coordination with the Organizing Department and the Midwest Initiative, is undertaking a national campaign to mobilize nonunion hospital workers in key markets to demand $15 and a union. This campaign is a key component of SEIU’s national strategy to highlight the importance of unions and the ability of workers’ collective organization to improve lives and communities.


The position is responsible for providing guidance and oversight of the Healthcare Division’s National Hospital Campaign. This position oversees Healthcare Organizing Coordinators in addition to overseeing, developing and implementing the overall strategy and direction for the National Hospital Campaign within the Healthcare Division.   The position is dedicated to the growth of the union.


Primary Responsibilities: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed.  Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification)


Serves as National Campaign Director for National Hospitals, works with National Organizing Team, Midwest Team and directs, plans, develops and implements all aspects of strategies for the campaign, including state, local and national work.


Develops and oversees the writing of state and national plans and strategies to support the implementation of the growth campaign.


Supervises all campaign staff, including field staff, and coordinates with the Healthcare Division Organizing Director.



Develops and manages the overall budget for campaign, and authorizes related expenditures.


Coordinates with SEIU departments, divisions, Area offices, state councils, local unions and other SEIU bodies on strategy, resource allocation, staffing and other issues related to the campaign.


Develops relationships with and coordinates work with other organizations and agendas in the states where the campaign strategy is working or nationally.


Advises Healthcare Division Director on political opportunities and strategies relating to the interaction with other campaigns.


Directs and advises the field, communications, policy and operations teams to assure integration of all work in conjunction with the campaign.


Advises and recommends to the Healthcare Division Director and International Executive Vice President on resource allocation and state campaign budgets based on an analysis of opportunity and campaign capacity.


Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.




 Include SEIU officers, local leaders, all SEIU and affiliate staff, state and local council directors, CTW leadership and staff, federal and state political leaders including Governors, State Elected Officials, Local elected officials, presidential campaign staff, policy analysts and others who work in coalition with division issues.


Direction and Decision Making:


This position reports to the Healthcare Division Organizing Director and works independently.


Education and Experience:


Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in public policy, political science or related field, and ten (10) to twelve (12) years of experience in both the labor movement and electoral campaigns, or a combination of education and experience that would provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:


Substantial management experience required.

Thorough knowledge of the labor movement’s structure and culture.

Thorough knowledge of strategic tactics unions use in organizing campaigns.

Thorough knowledge of healthcare policies and programs.

Thorough knowledge of strategies used in political campaigns.

Thorough knowledge of legislative and/or organizing campaigns.

Knowledge and experience in the use of polling, research and direct mail strategies in campaigns.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Demonstrated ability to build and manage a team.

Demonstrated ability to drive national programs amidst divergent local interests.

Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop and supervise staff.

Demonstrated ability to develop strategies, budgets and implement plans

Demonstrated ability to develop political campaign plans, programs, logistics and timelines

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and meet established deadlines

Demonstrated ability to make resource decisions about campaigns and elections

Demonstrated ability to work confidently with union leadership.

Skill in the use of personal computer, including Microsoft Office and the Internet


Physical Requirements:


Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may be required to work in other settings conducive to the assigned tasks.  Travel and long, irregular hours may be required.
