Summer Intern-Government Relations

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) seeks a dynamic and effective 2018 summer intern(s) for the Government Relations Department. Through working with GR team members, interns will gain a comprehensive understanding of how policy is created, shaped, influenced, and implemented. In addition, through assisting the department with day-to-day tasks, interns will sharpen their technical skills, build their organizational skills, enhance interpersonal communication skills, gain experience in investigative research, exercise critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learn how to work at goal oriented and deadline driven tasks. Additionally, the intern(s) will learn how to communicate the importance of federal policy to different audiences, including Planned Parenthood affiliates, coalition partners, policy makers, and grassroots advocates.

The program runs from June 4th 2018 to August 10th 2018.

Assisting in regulatory tracking and supporting administrative advocacy efforts.
Performing background research on key policy and legislative issues, including on global reproductive health, and background research on policymakers.
Tracking Congressional activity on issues related to domestic and global women’s health and Planned Parenthood, including bill and amendment sponsorship, floor statements, committee activity, media statement`s.
Attending Hill briefings and coalition meetings related to domestic and global policy issues;
Writing summaries of key reports and events for communications to Planned Parenthood affiliates.
Assisting in management of department databases to organize Congressional activity on our issues.
Facilitating Government Relations events and meetings and assisting with special projects for the VP’s office; and providing additional support to the Government Relations team as needed.

Candidate should be a current undergraduate student or should have completed studies within the last six months.
Experience working on issues related to reproductive health, public policy, or international relations or experience working on the hill or with non-profit organizations preferred.
An interest in the legislative process and federal policy.
Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office programs, internet research, email, etc.).
Strong analytical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
A strong commitment and understanding of the mission of Planned Parenthood and a passion for sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Courteous, well spoken, articulate, and have excellent telephone skills.
Excellent writing skills.
Able to work effectively in a fast paced environment.
