- Press Secretary, USA
New York, NY
Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our team in a mid-level communications role focused on outreach to New York City-based media and developing and fostering relationships with them. As the counterweight to the gun lobby, our work has a very strong focus on opposing gun lobby priorities in Congress and pushing for stronger gun laws in state legislatures.
Primary responsibilities include developing and executing communications strategy for Everytown and all of its parts – Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the Everytown Survivor Network and Mayors Against Illegal Guns – on both a national level and state level. Candidates should feel comfortable building relationships with New York City-based media as well as liaising with on-the-ground volunteers and gun violence survivors to implement strategies. The position entails direct engagement with New York City-based journalists on both reactive and proactive media relations and extensive writing and editing responsibilities. This communications work, like all politics, can often be unpredictable.
Organizational and strong writing skills are required. Additionally, a willingness to work in a campaign-like environment is mandatory. Job candidates should feel comfortable learning and translating policy positions, engaging with the media and cultivating relationships, booking and preparing key spokespeople for interviews. Ideal candidates will have experience in writing everything from talking points, to press releases to opinion pieces and more.
3-7 years of experience
Exceptional writing ability with the ability to create dynamic, persuasive communications materials – including press releases, op-eds, remarks, briefing materials and more
Deep experience and proven relationships with national broadcast, print and online media
Proven communication and media relations experience, with the ability to create and grow reporter and producer relationships over coffee, lunches, desksides and drinks.
The ideal candidate will be assertive, with an interest in proactively pitching day-to-day stories as well as building long-term narratives.
Interest in politics and advocacy on both a national and state legislative level
Willingness to work with a growing team in a fast-paced, campaign-like environment (sometimes unpredictable hours and crisis situations)
Deep entrepreneurialism and flexibility, with an ability to maneuver effectively in the face of uncertainty
Team management experience
Be a dynamic team player and maintain a sense of humor
While not required, knowledge of gun violence prevention issues is a plus
While not required, fluency in Spanish is a plus
Position is based in New York City
