Fall 2017 Legal Internship - Policy and Advocacy (DC)
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law

Location:
USA – Washington, DC, DC

Description – Position Summary

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Among our core priorities, we fight to protect voting rights, end mass incarceration, strengthen checks and balances, and preserve Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting-edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them — in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

We seek law students to work alongside staff in our Washington office on the Brennan Center’s policy advocacy, research, and litigation initiatives. Activities may include legal and policy analysis; legislative drafting at federal, state, and local levels; administrative and legislative advocacy; public education and scholarship; and litigation in trial and appellate courts. The Brennan Center’s interns are integral to all aspects of our work, including programmatic and strategic planning. We strive to offer a fun and intellectually-challenging legal intern experience that supports and supplements the vital advocacy offered by the Brennan Center. The internships will likely start in September 2017 and last for approximately 10 weeks.

We are seeking a legal intern for hire to work with the Director of our DC office on a variety of Brennan Center issues. Interns working in our Washington, DC office can expect their work to have a greater emphasis on advocacy and policy research than on litigation, though they will gain exposure to all facets of our work. The internship with the DC Office Director will entail a research and advocacy focus on issues within the scope of the Brennan Center’s justice and democracy work.

Qualifications: Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills; initiative, imagination, and versatility; and a passion for our issues.

How to Apply: Interested students should go to www.brennancenter.org/employment and upload, as a single document (where it says "attach resume"):

  • a cover letter explaining why they are interested in working with the Director of the DC Office on our policy and advocacy issues.
  • a current law school transcript (1Ls may send the transcript separately, as soon as it is available);
  • a legal writing sample;
  • a current resume; and
  • contact information for three references.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and decisions will be made as soon as an appropriate candidate is identified. We will only accept applications submitted through this website. If you have difficulty uploading these items as one document, e-mail them to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Brennan Center, an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, is strongly committed to diversity and welcomes applicants of all races, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations, gender identity and expression, including people who have been previously incarcerated.
